How often do App Store rankings change? We counted
Daily top 10 snapshots for 10 keywords over a month: how often positions moved, how often first place changed, and what that means for reading a campaign.
Search for the same keyword two days in a row and the results often look different. We wanted a number for how often that happens, so we took a month of daily snapshots of the top 10 for ten keywords in the US App Store and counted.
Note. These are our own measurements: one snapshot a day per keyword, September 19 to October 19, 2026, US storefronts only. A sample of ten keywords describes those ten keywords. The limits of the sample are listed at the end of the post.
The keywords
We picked keywords from different categories and demand levels, using Apple's popularity index as our platform reports it:
- High popularity:
vpn,ai chat,photo editor,casino. - Medium popularity:
habit tracker,crypto wallet,sleep sounds. - Minimum popularity (5):
mood tracker, recipes,ai assistant. Since the end of September 2025, Apple shows the minimum score of 5 for many keywords that used to score higher, per ASO.dev, so a 5 no longer tells you how much a term is searched.
For each keyword we compared every day's top 10 with the day before: 30 comparisons per keyword.
Most days, something in the top 10 moves
How often the top 10 moved depended on the keyword: from 13 days out of 30 for habit tracker to 28 out of 30 for vpn and casino. On eight of the ten keywords it moved on more than half of the days.
On an average day, between 13% and 41% of the apps in a keyword's top 10 sat in a different place than the day before. habit tracker was the calmest and casino the busiest. Across all ten keywords the average was about a quarter.
The list itself changed less often. An app entered or left the top 10 on 4 days out of 30 for habit tracker, photo editor, and sleep sounds, and on 16 days for casino.
First place is a different story
First place stayed with the same app for the whole month on eight of the ten keywords. The exceptions were ai chat, where first place changed hands on 11 days out of 30, and ai assistant, where it changed twice.
So the daily movement mostly happens below the top spot. An app at 1st place is usually holding it, and the reshuffling is among the places behind it.
Google Play moved less in the same month
We ran the same count on Google Play in the US for six of the keywords that had data in both stores.
| Keyword | App Store: days with movement | Google Play: days with movement |
|---|---|---|
vpn | 28 | 13 |
crypto wallet | 26 | 20 |
ai chat | 23 | 13 |
sleep sounds | 20 | 15 |
photo editor | 15 | 13 |
habit tracker | 13 | 20 |
Out of 30 day-to-day comparisons. On five of the six keywords the App Store top 10 moved on more days. On the same six keywords, the average share of top 10 apps that changed position was about 18% on Google Play and about 22% on the App Store.
One day stood out
On October 9, the top 10 list changed for seven of our ten App Store keywords, the most of any day in the month. On the other days it changed for between none and six.
Apple did not announce any change to search around that date. Our sample is ten keywords, so we read this as a busy day in the results, not as a confirmed update.
What this means for reading a campaign
Do not judge a keyword by one day. If a quarter of the top 10 moves on an ordinary day, a jump of a few places from Tuesday to Wednesday says little on its own. Compare a stretch of days before the campaign with a stretch during it.
Watch the shape over the whole run. A position that climbs while installs arrive and holds or slides after they stop tells you far more than any single reading. We cover how to read that shape in our post on telling whether a keyword campaign worked.
Expect more noise on busy keywords. casino and vpn moved on almost every day. On keywords like these, give the campaign more days before you draw a conclusion.
Check daily, read weekly. A tracker that records the position every day gives you the history to spot the shape. Checking by hand once a week misses most of what happened in between.
How it works on Rankforge
- The tracker records every day. Add a keyword and a country, and the position is saved daily for each store, free and without a card. That is the baseline this post is built on, for your own keywords.
- A campaign is read against that history. When you run keyword installs, the days before the start are already on the chart, so ordinary movement and the campaign's effect can be told apart.
Where this sample stops
- One snapshot a day. Changes within a day are invisible to us.
- US storefronts only. Other countries may behave differently.
- Top 10 only. Movement further down the list was not counted.
- Ten keywords, one month. Enough to see a pattern for these keywords, not to describe the whole store.
Frequently asked questions
- How often do App Store search rankings change?
- In our sample of 10 US keywords, at least one app in the top 10 changed position on 13 to 28 of 30 days, depending on the keyword. First place was far more stable. It changed hands on only two of the ten keywords during the month.
- Do Google Play rankings change as often as App Store rankings?
- Less often in our sample. On six keywords tracked in both stores, the Google Play top 10 moved on fewer days than the App Store top 10 for five of them.
- How long should I wait before judging a keyword campaign?
- Longer than a day. Positions in the top 10 shift on most days even without a campaign, so compare a stretch of days before the campaign with a stretch during and after it.
- Where does this data come from?
- From daily position snapshots our platform collects for tracked keywords, US storefronts, September 19 to October 19, 2026. One snapshot a day, so changes within a day are not counted.
